What’s the first question you get asked when you meet someone new or catch up with a friend? How’s work? What have you been doing lately? What are you working on now?
Having a job is a key component of life – it gives your life meaning, purpose and challenge, puts a roof over your head, helps you pay the bills, stops you getting bored and helps you make friends. Every human being has the right to purposeful, meaningful work- somewhere to live, someone to love and something to do.
But for the one in five Australian’s with a disability, difficulty finding work is a common theme. In fact, out of the 2.1 million Australian’s of working age who live with disability only 1 million are employed. When you consider that 84% of Australians of working age without disability work, and only 53% of Australians of working age with disability work, it’s a significant difference (Australian Network on Disability, 2020). We need to close the gap! All Australians deserve the opportunity to work in meaningful and open employment.
The challenge for all of us is to see past the disability and see the person. At EDGE we are changing lives through the power of employment. It’s our purpose, our reason for being. Australia’s achievements in disability employment compare poorly with other OECD countries – we rank 21st out of 29 countries (Productivity Commission, 2016).
In a country that values a fair go this means we’ve got some work to do. If you’d like a helping hand in finding employment or offering people with disability a job, we at EDGE would be delighted to talk to you.
