Finding his purpose
Over the past year, Jacob has found his purpose in his volunteer work: assisting others and contributing to their well-being at Aegis Aged Care’s Banksia Park facility.
Jacob’s passion for helping others was inspired by his Mum, who works in healthcare as a nurse. Jacob’s dream of being a nurse was not possible, so we worked with Jacob to find a meaningful role where he could still fulfil his purpose of assisting others.
His journey first began as a volunteer at Fiona Stanley Hospital, where he supported patients and visitors by guiding them to appointments, providing wheelchair transport and offering general assistance. Jacob thrived in this role, which led to his next chapter of volunteer work at Aegis.
In his current volunteer position, Jacob assists the Occupational Therapists in engaging with residents in various games and activities such as chair darts, ten-pin bowling and the ring toss game.
One of Jacob’s favourite activities is the karaoke sessions, with Jacob sharing, “I sometimes meet with residents one-to-one for social connection and assist with the karaoke session by singing songs with staff to residents. I get great enjoyment as I love singing, helping people and cheering up the residents. I feel very supported and I feel I have a purpose.”
The connection Jacob has built with the residents and the opportunity to brighten their day is clear to everyone, including his NDIS Employment Support Coach Janette. “Jacob brings an unmistakable sense of joy and warmth to both the residents and staff, creating an atmosphere where the happiness is not only visible, but deeply felt by everyone,” said Janette.
Edge has assisted Jacob through his NDIS plan with negotiating a suitable role, induction, transitioning into the role, transport to his worksite and weekly onsite support.
Jacob’s volunteer position has a positive impact on the residents at Aegis, but the positive impact of the role is also beneficial for Jacob.
